“Finding a good balance between having a career and being a mom,” – It’s an ongoing juggle.
It’s so easy to turn inward when we think about motherhood and what it means and how we do it every day. But even celebrities are not immune to trying to do it all – of course, their circumstances and list of daily to-do’s are different, but in essence, maybe not so much, as evidenced by Gwyneth Paltrow’s recent issue of her GOOP newsletter in which she showcased how she and three highly successful friends, venture capitalist Juliet de Baubigny and fashion designer Stella McCartney are navigating modern motherhood.
We love Juliet’s very practical tips, like 5-minute makeup, one hair style for the whole week and aggregating all medical appointments.
While these may not be items that speak to the greatest issues facing mothers or address the question of what is a mother, they do demonstrate the bustling lifestyle that’s part and parcel of today’s culture.
“Living in today’s modern world is not easy. There are many troubles related to the tempo of life, since we have never been so fast and productive before.” Says SteadyHealth.com online. “Getting enough sleep, setting realistic goals, and not overwhelming yourself” are tips from Study Guides and Strategies. Juliet’s recommendation of “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it”, sets priorities for how many dinners a family has together and if she manages to exercise each week.”
You can read more about working mothers and stress here. Many believe stress is the great illness of our time, for mothers and others. Health.com recently listed the 10 fields of major job categories where workers were most likely to experience stress or depression. Some form of care-giving, (nursing home, child care, social workers, health care workers and teachers) showed up in five of the 10 categories. Mothers do all these things and more.
There are solutions in addition to time management for mothers on the go too. They suggest adding aromatherapy, deep breathing and listening to relaxing music. All too often mothers forget themselves, while they are busy taking care of others.
Sometimes the little things make the biggest difference in the long run. Like finding ways to stay emotionally, physically and spiritually healthy will affect not only you, but your whole family. JR
